My journey with dyslexia began when my son was learning to read. His first grade teacher and I were very concerned about his struggle with reading. We knew he was smart, so it didn’t make sense why he was not reading well.
Although he went through a battery of tests for ADHD, Expressive Language Delay and more, we still didn’t have answers. In fact, we had even more questions. After spending thousands of dollars on well-known language/reading programs that are regularly advertised, he was still struggling just as much as before. After a great deal of frustration and confusion, we made an appointment to have him formally tested for dyslexia. We were relieved to finally know what we were dealing with.
After his diagnosis, he began working with a wonderful tutor who used an Orton Gillingham based program. Tutoring has given him skills and tools that will continue to help him succeed throughout his adult life. From my own experience over the years with my son’s dyslexia, I realized I wanted to help other families who have struggling readers. My background includes earning a bachelor’s degree in Communications from Auburn University. I completed the intensive, specialized, associate level training in the Orton Gillingham approach under Orton Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and Educators Fellow, Janet L. Jones, M.A in July 2010.
